KOREAN WAR AMBASSADOR FOR PEACE MEDAL

As an expression of gratitude, the South Korean government is awarding the Ambassador For Peace Medal to the U.S. military personnel who served in-country during the Korean War.  Previously, this medal was only given to those who revisited Korea after the war.  That honor has now been expanded to those who could not make a return trip.

To be eligible for this medal, a veteran must have served in Korea between June 25, 1950 and July 27, 1953.  It is also available to those who veterans who participated in United Nations peacekeeping operations until the end of 1955.  The medal can be awarded posthumously, but priority will go to currently surviving veterans in the U.S.

Also women who served in Korea during the dates mentioned, such as nurses, and other support personnel, men or women, are also eligible to receive the medal.

The veterans or family members must fill out an application form (available via the Korean War Veterans Association online), or by contacting the Korean Consulate nearest the veterans home.  It is important that a DD214 be provided with the application form.  If the veteran was a Navy service member aboard an American naval vessel assigned to Korean waters, during the time frame noted previously, they are eligible for the medal. There are no costs or fees to the family or the veteran to receive this medal.  It could take 4-8 weeks from the date the application is received and accepted by the Embassy to receive medal.
